Shorter liquor trading hours for Mossel Bay restaurants/hotels/pubs?
Mossel Bay Municipality is proposing new, shorter liquor trading hours. The public can submit comments until 17h00 on 20 August (Tuesday). The liquor trading hours are proposed to be reduced from 02h00 to 01h00 for the 1 February to 30 November period. To Vote - Click HERE. Liquor trading hours for 1 December to 31 January are proposed to remain the same. This discrepancy has licensed liquor traders up in arms. There seems no rational basis for such a proposal as alcohol consumption is at its highest and policing most challenging during the festive holiday period of December and January, which trading hours are to remain at the current time of 02h00. Furthermore, the proposal discriminates between on consumption businesses as the local casino operator has been exempted from the reduction in liquor trading hours. Three (3) public meetings have been scheduled for public engagement on this issue, for 14 August (18h00 - Great Brak River Community Hall), 15 August (15h00 - KwaNonqaba Community Hall) and 19 August (18h00 - Mossel Bay Community Hall). They are sure to be as lively as the previous, unsuccessful attempt by the Municpality to reduce liquor trading hours a number of years ago.
