National Distribution and Manufacturing Liquor Licences are granted by the National Liquor Authority (NLA). It is commonly known as the National Liquor Board. It was formed in terms of the Liquor Act, No. 59 of 2003 (also known as the National Liquor Act).
The main difference between the NLA and Provincial Liquor Boards is the following :
NLA - Regulates Manufacturing and/or Distribution of liquor at national level
Provincial Liquor Boards - Regulates Micro manufacturing and Retailing of liquor at provincial level.
NB - The NLA Requires Applicants to Commit to Social Responsibility by addressing the following :
1. Commitment to black economic empowerment;
2. Contribution to combating alcohol abuse;
3. Promotion of job creation;
4. Diversity of ownership;
5. Exports;
6. New entrants to the industry, and
7. Efficiency of operation.
